We began our “retail practice” back in the mid 40’s when Paul Anderson, an electrician at Newport News Shipbuilding was offered a small glass greenhouse for free if only he would remove it from the neighbor’s property. That “gift” allowed for his hobby to grow—literally!
In 1953 he purchased the first 1 ½ acre lot on what is now a 10 acre facility on
Jefferson Ave. in
Newport News. Paul moved that first greenhouse to the new property in 1954 (pictured above). In 1972, he sold the business to his son Clark. Since then, expansions and renovations have been a constant. 2009 was no exception as
Anderson’s, once again, transformed itself in to a world class garden center experience.
Anderson’s Home & Garden Showplace boasts a fantastic selection of home furnishings, an impeccable landscape design and installation team, the freshest plants for indoors and out, a high class silk department, and the peninsula’s favorite place to “do lunch”—the incredible Showplace Cafe. Sure, the face of the business has changed a lot over the years but looking back on it all now, it’s amazing how much some things never change!
In January, 2007 & 2008 Today’s Garden Center magazine selected
Anderson’s as one of the top 100 Revolutionary Garden Centers in the country, and Nursery Retailer has recognized
Anderson’s as one of the Top 100 Independent Garden Centers in
America two years in a row! The products offered still adhere to the highest standards of quality. Anyone who has bought a “home grown”
Anderson’s pansy, bedding plant, tomato plant, garden mum or poinsettia knows that the quality is not duplicated anywhere else.
The
Anderson family has been residents of the
Virginia
Peninsula for over 80 years—We are local. Our business grows plants and sells merchandise for the local community—We are the local Marketplace. We provide beauty and enhance the quality of life to all who visit us. We love what we do, who we are, and where we live. We ARE
Newport News!
